TundeAre you planning to study Sociology at a Nigerian university in 2027? One of the first things you need to know is the correct JAMB subject combination and O’Level requirements for the course.
Choosing the wrong subjects can affect your admission chances, even if you score high in JAMB. This guide explains the JAMB subject combination for Sociology 2027, WAEC and NECO requirements, Direct Entry qualifications, and how to check the requirements for your preferred university.
What Is the JAMB Subject Combination for Sociology?
For most universities, the JAMB UTME subject combination for Sociology is:
- Use of English (compulsory)
- Government or another accepted Social Science or Arts subject
- Economics or another accepted Social Science or Arts subject
- One more accepted Social Science or Arts subject
JAMB’s general Sociology requirement is three Social Science or Arts subjects in addition to English Language. However, some universities have special requirements. You must check the requirements for your chosen institution before completing your JAMB registration.
JAMB Subject Combination for Sociology 2027
Sociology is the study of human society, social relationships, culture, family, crime, education, and how people behave in groups. Because the course focuses on society and human behaviour, many universities accept subjects from the Arts and Social Sciences.
A common combination to consider is:
| JAMB Subject | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Use of English | Compulsory for UTME candidates. |
| Government | Useful for understanding government, public institutions, and society. Some universities specifically require it or History. |
| Economics | Helps you understand how people, businesses, and societies use resources. |
| Geography, History, Commerce, Literature in English, CRS, IRS, or another accepted subject | Choose a subject accepted by your preferred university. |
This is a general guide, not a guaranteed combination for every university. Some institutions require particular subjects or accept only certain alternatives. Check your exact course and university on the JAMB Eligibility Checker before registration.
WAEC and NECO Requirements for Sociology 2027
To study Sociology, you generally need five relevant O’Level credit passes, including English Language and Government or History, plus three other accepted subjects. A pass in Mathematics is required under the general entry requirement, but many universities specifically require a credit in Mathematics.
Your WAEC, NECO, or other accepted O’Level results must meet the requirements of the university you want to attend.
Common O’Level subjects for Sociology
| Subject | What to know |
|---|---|
| English Language | A credit is generally required. |
| Government or History | At least one is commonly required. |
| Mathematics | Check whether your university requires a credit or accepts a pass. |
| Economics | Commonly accepted as a relevant subject. |
| Other relevant subjects | Subjects such as Geography, Literature in English, CRS, IRS, or Commerce may be accepted, depending on the institution. |
Do not assume that every university accepts the same subjects. Confirm the requirements for your chosen school, especially if you have a pass rather than a credit in Mathematics.
Does Sociology Require Mathematics in JAMB?
Not every university uses the same UTME subject combination for Sociology. Some universities accept Mathematics as one of the UTME subjects, while others specify subjects such as Government, History, Economics, or other Arts and Social Science subjects.
Remember that Mathematics in JAMB and Mathematics in WAEC or NECO are two different requirements. A university may not require Mathematics as a UTME subject but may still require a Mathematics credit in your O’Level results.
Before choosing your subjects, use the official JAMB Eligibility Checker to confirm the rules for your preferred university.

Universities That Offer Sociology in Nigeria
Sociology is offered by various federal, state, and private universities in Nigeria. The available institutions and their admission requirements may change, so check the current JAMB brochure before making your choices.
When searching for a university, confirm these three things:
- The university offers Sociology for the admission year you are applying for.
- You meet its UTME subject combination and O’Level requirements.
- You meet any additional admission conditions published by the institution.
Direct Entry Requirements for Sociology
If you already have an accepted qualification after secondary school, you may be able to apply for Sociology through Direct Entry instead of starting with UTME.
The general JAMB brochure requirement for Sociology includes two A’Level passes, including Government or History. However, universities may accept different qualifications or set additional conditions.
Depending on the institution, accepted qualifications may include:
- GCE Advanced Level passes in relevant subjects.
- IJMB or JUPEB qualifications with the required grades and subjects.
- An accepted National Diploma or other qualification where the university specifically permits it.
Do not assume that every university accepts every qualification. Check the Direct Entry section of the current JAMB brochure for your preferred institution and course.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing Sociology Subjects
- Choosing subjects without checking the university: A combination accepted by one school may not be accepted by another.
- Ignoring O’Level Mathematics: Check whether your chosen university requires a credit or accepts a pass.
- Confusing JAMB subjects with WAEC subjects: The requirements are related but are not the same.
- Relying on old admission information: Requirements can change, so check the current JAMB brochure.
- Assuming every university offers Sociology: Confirm that the course is available at your preferred institution for your admission year.
- Using unverified social media advice: Confirm important admission information through JAMB and the university.
Conclusion
Choosing the correct JAMB subject combination is an important step towards studying Sociology in 2027. The general combination is Use of English plus three accepted Arts or Social Science subjects, but individual universities may set special requirements.
Also check your WAEC or NECO grades, especially English Language, Government or History, and Mathematics. Do not complete your JAMB registration based only on a general list or advice from another student.
