It follows the Christian Religious Studies syllabus on the official JAMB iBASS website.

What is the JAMB CRS syllabus?

The syllabus is JAMB official list of what can come out in the CRS exam. It says JAMB wants you to be able to:
  • know the main teachings of the Christian faith in the Bible;
  • explain the meaning of Bible teachings and themes;
  • use those teachings in everyday life in society;
  • judge how well people follow these teachings today.
This means you must do more than memorise stories. You should know the lesson in each story.

Pay attention to the topics that link to life in society, like civic responsibility, dignity of labour, corruption and Christian living in the community. Try this: Which New Testament letter teaches forgiveness for a runaway slave, Onesimus? Answer: Philemon.

Bible passages and Bible version

Each topic comes with Bible passages. Read them, not only your textbook notes. The syllabus names the Revised Standard Version of the Bible, so use it, or compare your own Bible with it when you study. JAMB recommends these 11 textbooks and the Bible. You do not need all of them. One good textbook, the Bible and past questions are enough for most students.

How to study JAMB CRS: a 5-week plan

  1. Week 1: Section A. Read the passages, then write one short summary for each of the 8 topics.
  2. Week 2: Section B. Make a list of the prophets and what each one taught.
  3. Week 3: Section C, topics 1 to 10 (the life and ministry of Jesus).
  4. Week 4: Section C, topics 11 to 19 (the death of Jesus and the early Church).
  5. Week 5: Section D, then practise past questions on all four sections.
After each topic, close your book and say the lesson in one sentence. If you cannot, read it again.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping the Bible passages. Questions often come from them.
  • Mixing up similar stories. Compare characters side by side, like Ahab and Gehazi, or Saul and Solomon.
  • Reading only Sections C and D. All four sections can appear in the exam.
  • Memorising without the lesson. JAMB also asks you to explain and apply what you read.
  • Using old notes only. Check the current syllabus on iBASS before you start.
