Question 1: Write a story to illustrate the saying: “There is light at the end of the tunnel.”

There Is Light at the End of the Tunnel

Life is full of challenges, but difficult times do not last forever. Those who remain patient, hardworking, and hopeful often achieve success in the end. My experience during my final year in secondary school clearly illustrates the saying, “There is light at the end of the tunnel.”

My name is Musa, the first son in a family of six. My father was a commercial driver while my mother sold vegetables in the local market. Although my parents worked tirelessly, the little income they earned was hardly enough to feed the family, let alone pay school fees. Despite our financial difficulties, my parents always encouraged me to take my studies seriously because they believed education was the key to a better future.

As I prepared for my NECO examination, tragedy struck. My father was involved in a serious road accident that left him unable to work for several months. The family suddenly lost its only stable source of income. My school fees remained unpaid, and I was sent home several times. At one point, I almost gave up my education because I felt there was no hope.

One afternoon, while sitting sadly under a mango tree, my class teacher noticed my condition and asked what was wrong. After listening to my story, he encouraged me not to lose hope. He reminded me that every difficult situation has an end and that perseverance always brings rewards. His words gave me renewed strength and determination.

To support my family, I started helping a local shopkeeper after school every evening. The little money I earned helped me buy exercise books and other learning materials. I also borrowed textbooks from my friends and spent long hours reading in the community library. There were nights when electricity was unavailable, so I studied under a kerosene lantern until late at night.

Many people mocked me because of my poor background. Some believed I would fail the examination since I lacked the necessary materials. Instead of allowing their comments to discourage me, I used them as motivation to work even harder. I constantly reminded myself that success belongs to those who refuse to give up.

As the examination approached, I revised every subject carefully and attended all extra lessons organised by my teachers. My classmates admired my determination, while my teachers continued to encourage me. Their support strengthened my confidence.

Finally, the examination ended, and we all waited anxiously for the results. The waiting period felt like the longest moment of my life. Every day, I prayed that my hard work would not be in vain.

When the results were eventually released, I hurried to the cyber café with my friends. My hands trembled as the operator checked my result. To my greatest surprise and joy, I had obtained excellent grades in all my subjects. I was among the best graduating students in my school.

The good news spread quickly throughout the community. My parents shed tears of joy, and my teachers congratulated me warmly. Shortly afterwards, a philanthropist who heard my story awarded me a full scholarship to study at the university. My father’s health also improved, and he returned to work. The period of hardship gradually came to an end, and our family regained hope.

Looking back today, I realise that if I had surrendered to fear and disappointment, I would never have achieved my dreams. Every challenge I faced made me stronger and more determined to succeed.

Indeed, my experience proves beyond doubt that there is always light at the end of the tunnel. With patience, perseverance, faith, and hard work, every dark moment will eventually give way to a brighter future.
